Cooling agents are chemicals that produce a cooling effect without strong medicinal properties. The most common cooling agent is menthol (especially L-menthol), but due to its strong odor and irritating effects on skin, mucous membranes, and eyes, it is not suitable for large-scale use. As a result, many scientists have synthesized and extracted new-generation cooling agents.Cooling Agent WS-23 is chemically known as N,2,3-trimethyl-2-(1-methylethyl)butanamide or N,2,3-trimethyl-2-isopropylbutanamide. The English name is N,2,3-trimethyl-2-isopropylbutanamide, abbreviated as WS-23. Molecular formula: C10H21NO, molecular weight: 171.29. It is characterized by a refreshing, lasting, and non-irritating cooling effect with no bitterness and low dosage requirement.
Production Process of Cooling Agent WS-23
There are several preparation methods. One simpler method involves using acrylonitrile and 2-bromopropane to alkylate and generate the intermediate 2,3-dimethyl-2-isopropylbutyronitrile. This intermediate is then reacted with methanol in two steps using concentrated sulfuric acid as a catalyst to form the amide.

Applications of Cooling Agent WS-23
(1) Widely used in food, beverages, candies, cosmetics, tobacco products, and pharmaceuticals for a cooling and refreshing effect.
(2) In tobacco and vapor flavoring, it enhances the cooling sensation of smoke, masks irritation, and adjusts flavor profiles. Recommended usage: Alone it only provides cooling, must be combined with mint flavoring for a menthol-like sharpness.
